The Local Vigilante group in Gulu town, Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State have killed nine suspected bandits with several others arrested, while waiting to collect ransom from the families of their abductees.
According to reports that were gathered, the kidnappers/bandits had raided the town some few days before they were discovered. It was reported that during the raid, some inhabitants of the town were abducted and the families of the victims were told to pay ransom before the victims would be released.
An eyewitness who spoke to newsmen explained that the families of the victims had already raised the requested ransom, and had contacted the bandits, who had given them instructions on how the money would be delivered, before the intervention of the Local Vigilante.
The eyewitness further explained that, the family members of the abductees went to the spot that they were told by the bandits, on Monday, 15th of March, to deliver the ransom to them, on getting there, some of them were told to go back to town and get food items. While they were going to get the items, they ran into local vigilante, told them the situation on ground, and the vigilante group mobilized themselves to rescue the victims.
“There was exchange of gunfire between the vigilante and the bandits, which lasted very long, but the vigilante group were able to kill nine of the bandits and arrested seven others after which they brought the remains of the bandits to the village square,” the eyewitness said.
The arrested suspected bandits have now been handed over to men of the Police Special Task in Ebbo.
