Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, The Nigerian Chief of Army Staff has reacted to the investigative report released by CNN on the Lekkimassacre incident. Gen. Buratai said that the Nigerian army is a professional army and cannot act outside the rules of engagement as stated in the Nigerian constitution.
The Chief of Army staff made this statement while receiving some members of the house of representatives at the Army headquarters on Wednesday. He also mentioned that Nigeria should feel safe, because the army doesn’t operate outside the rules of engagement and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
It should be recalled that the Army was accused of shooting at protesters at the Lekki tollgate on the night of October 20th, 2020, and CNN has also released an investigative report to support the accusations made against the Nigerian Army. But the Chief of army staff in his response said the cannot operate outside the rules of engagement.
He said, “Let me assure you and all Nigerians that the Nigerian Army is professional. We follow our rules of engagement. Nigerians should feel safe. We abide by rules of engagement and the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.”
The question that remains in the heart of many Nigerians that witnessed the Lekki massacre is what the rules of engagement are.
